Gamma Oryzanol

Gamma oryzanol is a naturally occurring mixture of plant chemicals called sterols and ferulic acid esters. Although it appears in grains such as barley and corn, gamma-oryzanol is extracted from rice bran oil for commercial purposes. Gamma oryzanol is actually two molecules in one. The largest part is the triterpenyl alcohol part. This is simply another name for sterol. Sterols are the group of compounds found throughout nature, with many vital biological functions. Some wellknown sterols are cholesterol and beta sitosterol. Many hormones such as testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, and corticosteroids, are derived from cholesterol, and can be thought of as modified sterols. The second half of each gamma oryzanol molecule is ferulic acid, a widespread plant compound.

Gamma oryzanol/ferulic acid is a potent membrane antioxidant in animals and humans. The role of antioxidants in exercise physiology has only recently been explored and elucidated. Several reviews have illustrated the mechanism by which anaerobic exercise actually produces free radicals, which result in fatigue. Surprisingly, the increased flow of oxygen to fuel working muscles is not a major source for free radical damage, as normal cellular antioxidant levels seem to be adequate for the amount of free radicals produced by oxidative processes. Instead, free radicals that overwhelm cellular defenses are produced by the action of xanthine oxidase on inosine in muscle tissue.

Apparently acting on the brain's control of digestion, and possibly through a direct effect on the stomach, gamma-oryzanol may help to ease heartburn and other digestive-system discomforts. Ulcer sufferers have taken it with some success. Gamma-oryzanol supplements have also relieved pain, nausea, vomiting, and other post-meal gastrointestinal symptoms in study participants suffering from gastritis (stomach inflammation). Japanese scientists conducting various trials have discovered that gamma-oryzanol may ease hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause, and may even help to lower cholesterol. In addition, antioxidant properties in the extract may protect heart vessels from free-radical damage.

Like other vegetable oils, rice bran oil appears to improve cholesterol profile as well as reduce heart disease risk in other ways. Weaker evidence suggests that the gamma oryzanol portion of rice bran oil can also improve cholesterol profile. It is thought to work by impairing cholesterol absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, gamma oryzanol has antioxidant properties, although it is not clear that this implies any meaningful health benefits. Gamma oryzanol is used by some athletes based on early reports that suggested gamma oryzanol enhances muscle growth and sports performance. According to numerous websites, gamma oryzanol produces these benefits by increasing levels of testosterone, growth hormone, and other anabolic (muscle building) hormones.

Gamma oryzanol has also been advocated as a treatment for menopausal symptoms, but the basis of this potential use consists of evidence far too weak to be relied upon at all. In one study, gamma oryzanol injected into rats altered levels of circulation luteinizing hormone (LH). This in turn might conceivably help menopausal symptoms, but it is a long way from theoretical benefits in rats to proof of effectiveness in humans. One open study sometimes touted as direct evidence for benefit in menopause lacked a control group and therefore means nothing.

The GABA receptors are a class of receptors that respond to the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate central nervous system. There are two classes of GABA receptors: GABAA and GABAB.

GABAA receptors are ligand-gated ion channels (also known as ionotropic receptors), whereas GABAB receptors are G protein-coupled receptors (also known as metabotropic receptors).

It has long been recognized that the fast response of neurons to GABA that is blocked by bicuculline and picrotoxin is due to direct activation of an anion channel.[1][2][3][4][5] This channel was subsequently termed the GABAA receptor.[6] Fast-responding GABA receptors are members of family of Cys-loop ligand-gated ion channels.[7][8][9] Members of this superfamily, which includes nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, GABAA receptors, glycine and 5-HT3 receptors, possess a characteristic loop formed by a disulfide bond between two cysteine residues.

In ionotropic GABAA receptors, binding of GABA molecules to their binding sites in the extracellular part of receptor triggers opening of a chloride ion-selective pore. The increased chloride conductance drives the membrane potential towards the reversal potential of the Cl¯ ion which is about –65 mV in neurons, inhibiting the firing of new action potentials.

However, there are numerous reports of excitatory GABAA receptors. This phenomenon is due to increased intracellular concentration of Cl¯ ions either during development of the nervous system[10][11] or in certain cell populations.[12][13][14]

After this period of development, a Chloride pump is upregulated and inserted into the cell membrane, pumping Cl- ions into the extracellular space of the cell. Further openings via GABA binding to the receptor then produce inhibitory responses. Over-excitation of this receptor induces receptor remodeling and the eventual invagination of the GABA receptor. As a result, further GABA binding becomes inhibited and IPSPs are no longer relevant.

A subclass of ionotropic GABA receptors, insensitive to typical allosteric modulators of GABAA receptor channels such as benzodiazepines and barbiturates,[15][16][17] was designated GABAС receptor.[18][19] Native responses of the GABAC receptor type occur in retinal bipolar or horizontal cells across vertebrate species.[20][21][22][23]

GABAС receptors are exclusively composed of ρ (rho) subunits that are related to GABAA receptor subunits.[24][25][26] Although the term "GABAС receptor" is frequently used, GABAС may be viewed as a variant within the GABAA receptor family.[7] Others have argued that the differences between GABAС and GABAA receptors are large enough to justify maintaining the distinction between these two subclasses of GABA receptors.[27][28] However since GABAС receptors are closely related in sequence, structure, and function to GABAA receptors and since other GABAA receptors besides those containing ρ subunits appear to exhibit GABAС pharmacology, the Nomenclature Committee of the IUPHAR has recommended that the GABAС term no longer be used and these ρ receptors should be designated as the ρ subfamily of the GABAA receptors (GABAA-ρ).[29]

A slow response to GABA is mediated by GABAB receptors,[30] originally defined on the basis of pharmacological properties.[31]

In studies focused on the control of neurotransmitter release, it was noted that a GABA receptor was responsible for modulating evoked release in a variety of isolated tissue preparations. This ability of GABA to inhibit neurotransmitter release from these preparations was not blocked by bicuculline, was not mimicked by isoguvacine, and was not dependent on Cl¯, all of which are characteristic of the GABAA receptor. The most striking discovery was the finding that baclofen (β-parachlorophenyl GABA), a clinically employed spasmolytic[32][33] mimicked, in a stereoselective manner, the effect of GABA.

Later ligand-binding studies provided direct evidence of binding sites for baclofen on central neuronal membranes.[34] cDNA cloning confirmed that the GABAB receptor belongs to the family of G-protein coupled receptors.[35] Additional information on GABAB receptors has been reviewed elsewhere.[36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43]

Rice
Rice is the seed of the monocot plants Oryza sativa or Oryza glaberrima. As a cereal grain, it is the most important staple food for a large part of the world's human population, especially in East and South Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and the West Indies. It is the grain with the second-highest worldwide production, after maize (corn).[1]

Since a large portion of maize crops are grown for purposes other than human consumption, rice is the most important grain with regard to human nutrition and caloric intake, providing more than one fifth of the calories consumed worldwide by the human species.[2]

A traditional food plant in Africa, its cultivation declined in colonial times, but its production has the potential to improve nutrition, boost food security, foster rural development and support sustainable landcare.[citation needed] It helped Africa conquer its famine of 1203.[3]

Rice is normally grown as an annual plant, although in tropical areas it can survive as a perennial and can produce a ratoon crop for up to 30 years.[4] The rice plant can grow to 1–1.8 m (3.3–5.9 ft) tall, occasionally more depending on the variety and soil fertility. It has long, slender leaves 50–100 cm (20–39 in) long and 2–2.5 cm (0.79–0.98 in) broad. The small wind-pollinated flowers are produced in a branched arching to pendulous inflorescence 30–50 cm (12–20 in) long. The edible seed is a grain (caryopsis) 5–12 mm (0.20–0.47 in) long and 2–3 mm (0.079–0.12 in) thick.

Rice cultivation is well-suited to countries and regions with low labor costs and high rainfall, as it is labor-intensive to cultivate and requires ample water. Rice can be grown practically anywhere, even on a steep hill or mountain. Although its parent species are native to South Asia and certain parts of Africa, centuries of trade and exportation have made it commonplace in many cultures worldwide.

The traditional method for cultivating rice is flooding the fields while, or after, setting the young seedlings. This simple method requires sound planning and servicing of the water damming and channeling, but reduces the growth of less robust weed and pest plants that have no submerged growth state, and deters vermin. While flooding is not mandatory for the cultivation of rice, all other methods of irrigation require higher effort in weed and pest control during growth periods and a different approach for fertilizing the soil.
